Sensei Teruo Chinen |
Chinen Teruo Sensei was born in 1941, in
Kobe, Japan. He moved to Okinawa before 1950. There he lived three doors
down from Miyagi Sensei's house where he was formally introduced to him by
an uncle to begin his training in Goju-ryu. His direct instructor was
Miyazato Sensei. After Miyagi Sensei passed away in 1953, Chinen Teruo
Sensei helped Miyazato Sensei move Miyagi Sensei's training equipment to a
new dojo, which was soon named the Jundo-Kan. Between 1958 and 1969, Chinen Sensei was in Tokyo at the Yoyogi dojo, teaching along side Higaonna Morio Sensei (IOGKF). In 1969, Sensei Chinen moved to the United States and began teaching Okinawan Goju-Ryu in Spokane, Washington. At that time Chinen Sensei was Chairman of the Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karatedo Federation. |
| Between 1973 and 1979, Chinen Sensei traveled
to Europe and South Africa, laying the foundation for the IOGKF which he
co-chaired. Along with Mr. James Rousseau and a few other Europeans, they
built a strong international organization for the IOGKF. Chinen Sensei then formed Jundo-Kan International in honor of his teacher, Sensei Miyazato. Jundo-Kan International dojos now operate throughout the United States, Canada, South America, Africa, New Zealand, Ukaraine, and Europe. Chinen Sensei spends much of his time traveling the world lecturing and teaching traditional Okinawan style karate. He has become one of the most sought after speakers, lecturing to groups from all styles of karate. |
